Things to do around here

Places you go to do something, as opposed to somewhere to eat or an event this week. 10 listed across 4 categories, each one checked against the venue's own page — the date on every card says when.

Bowling

7 listed

Seven centres across Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties. Almost none of them publish prices, and several publish no hours either — where that's true, this says so rather than repeating numbers off a listing site.

King Pin Lanes

Rome · Oneida County

Lanes with an arcade, a bar and a grill on site. Open-bowling hours aren't posted — events take lanes out, so the centre asks you to call for availability.

Canastota Hi-Way Bowl

Canastota · Madison County

Lanes from 11:30 a.m. until close. From September through April open bowling ends at 6 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, when leagues take over. Rock n' Roll bowling Saturdays from 6 p.m.

League restriction runs September–April

Caz Sports Bowl

Cazenovia · Madison County

Bowling since 1938, with a bar, a restaurant, an arcade and indoor cornhole. Rock and Bowl on Friday and Saturday nights.

Vista Lanes

Yorkville · Oneida County

The closest lanes to Utica since Pin-O-Rama closed. Bumper bowling, leagues and a lounge. The domain listings advertise for it no longer resolves, so Facebook is where it posts.

Bowling Lanes at the CAC

Sherrill · Oneida County

Twelve lanes inside the city-owned Community Activity Center, alongside a gym, a youth centre, pool tables and a concession area. Reservations go through the city recreation department.

Utica has no bowling alley

Utica has had no bowling alley since AMF Pin-O-Rama closed on July 1, 2023 and its Genesee Street site became a car wash. Bowlers gathered more than a thousand signatures petitioning the Common Council for a replacement; none has opened. The nearest lanes are Vista Lanes in Yorkville. State Bowling Center in Ilion, open since the late 1940s, was demolished in March 2023 and replaced by a Walgreens. Source ↗

Not listed, and why

  • Herkimer Bowling Center, 322 S Caroline St, Herkimer — no website or Facebook page, so whether it is still open could not be established.
  • Waterville Bowling Center, White St, Waterville — listings disagree on both the street number and whether it is still trading, and it publishes no page of its own.

Movie theatres

2 listed

Two screens in the three counties, and they do different jobs: fourteen auditoriums of first-run in New Hartford, and 35mm silents and early talkies in Rome.

Marquee Cinemas Orchard 14

New Hartford · Oneida County

The region's first-run multiplex. Tuesday is the cheap day, at less than half the evening price.

Adult $16.25 after 4 p.m., $14.25 matinee · child 2–11 and senior 62+ $13.75 all day · military $14.75 evenings · Tuesday $7.00 matinee, $8.00 evening, $6.75 child and senior · 3D adds $3.00, MXC adds $2.25

Capitol Arts Complex

Rome · Oneida County

A 1928 house programming silent and early-sound film from archive prints — the Library of Congress, MoMA, George Eastman Museum, UCLA and the BFI among them. Capitolfest, its 35mm festival, runs August 14–16 this year, with a pre-glow screening the evening of the 13th.

Utica's own 1927 theatre doesn't show films

The Uptown on Genesee Street opened on December 29, 1927 and is the oldest surviving theatre in the city; it joined the National Register of Historic Places in August 2020. It now runs as the Uptown Theatre for Creative Arts — comedy and live performance — and screens no film. Its owners have said they intend to once the auditorium is fully usable. Source ↗

Mini golf

0 listed

There is no mini golf course open in Oneida, Herkimer or Madison county. Bonomo's in Clinton still trades as a Dari Creme, and is still called Mini Golfland by its own sign and by every listing site, but its own page states the course is closed. Tee Time on Mohawk Street in Herkimer has also closed. The nearest courses are outside the three counties: Barnyard Swing on Route 28 below Cooperstown, Big Don's in Cicero, and Mr. Shake in Richfield Springs.

Arcades

1 listed

One standalone arcade in the three counties. The rest of the region's machines sit inside the bowling centres — King Pin in Rome, Canastota Hi-Way and Caz Sports Bowl all run one, and are listed under Bowling above.

Every listing links the page it was checked against, and that page is always the business or the municipality speaking for itself — never an aggregator. Where a venue publishes no hours or prices, this says so instead of copying numbers from a listing site. Something here wrong, closed, or missing? Email corrections@mohawkcentral.com. Nothing here is paid placement.
