Oneida County
Bike & Walking Trails — Empire State Trail
Two sections cross the county. Rome to Utica is 16 miles, starting at Fort Stanwix and running three quarters of a mile along James St before the off-road trail begins beside the canal, ending at the trailhead car park off North Genesee St in north Utica; surface alternates paved and older stonedust, with three stretches of about half a mile each signed along public road shoulders. Utica to Frankfort is 11 miles, and only the first 3.5 are off-road — the remaining 7.5 follow the shoulder of Southside Road and are meant for cyclists comfortable riding in traffic. Services exist in Rome, Oriskany and Utica and nowhere in between.
Hiking & Ski Trails (State Forests)
The Jackson Hill Trail System in Jackson Hill State Forest is the marked one. Hogsback State Forest permits mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and horseback riding but maintains no trails for any of them — go expecting unmarked ground. Every trail on DEC land is open to cross-country skiing in winter, whether or not it is groomed or signed as a ski trail.
Boat Launches (DEC)
Fourteen state launch sites, none charging a fee. Delta Lake is the big one, with parking for 70 cars and trailers; the Oneida Lake sites at Vienna and Verona have accessible features. Along the Mohawk there are hand launches at Utica, Marcy and Whitestown and both hard-surface and hand launches at Rome.
Fishing Access — West Canada Creek
About 26 miles of accessible stream frontage and 11 parking lots along the creek, which runs down through Herkimer and Oneida to the Mohawk. Brown trout from Hinckley Dam to Herkimer; smallmouth and fallfish lower down. Trenton Falls is no-kill, artificial lures only, with an extended season. Below Trenton Falls and Hinckley Dam the creek surges without warning when the power dam releases — DEC advises watching for rising water, moving to shore, and wearing a flotation device.
Herkimer County
Bike & Walking Trails — Empire State Trail
Little Falls to Canajoharie runs 19 miles east along an abandoned railroad bed, surfaced in paved asphalt and stonedust, through Little Falls, Fort Plain and Canajoharie. Public parking is at Herkimer Home State Historic Site and at a trailhead on the west side of Canajoharie. Services exist in those three villages and nowhere between them, and the stretches between access points are long — DEC allows 6 to 10 hours for the full distance. Dogs are permitted. Westward, the Utica–Frankfort section is 11 miles of which 7.5 follow the shoulder of Southside Road; off-road trail resumes a mile east of Frankfort.
Boat Launches (DEC)
State launch sites sit in two clusters. Along the Mohawk and Barge Canal: hard-surface ramps at Frankfort, Little Falls and Ilion, hand launches at Herkimer and Mohawk. North in the Town of Webb and Ohio: Fourth Lake, Stillwater Reservoir, Nicks Lake, North and South Lake and others. Stillwater Reservoir has accessible features; Nicks Lake charges a day-use fee in season and the rest do not.
Fishing Access — West Canada Creek

Madison County
Hiking & Riding Trails — Brookfield Trail System
Over 100 miles of connected trail across three state forests in the south-east of the county — Charles E. Baker (9,000 acres, the core), Brookfield Railroad and Beaver Creek. Carriage roads, truck trails and wooded track over hilly, rocky ground, open to hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The assembly area on Moscow Road has a pavilion, picnic area, camping, and covered tie stalls for about 150 horses. Riding season runs May 1 to October 31; hiking is open all year.
Hiking & Ski Trails — Stoney Pond State Forest
1,469 acres with a 13-mile Nordic ski trail network, most of it graded for beginner and intermediate skiers, that doubles as hiking trail from spring through autumn. The trail winds around the 44-acre pond, reached from a trailhead off Jones Road. Camping is free, but a reservation is required from May 1 to September 30, and a permit for stays of four nights or more.
Boat Launches (DEC)
State launch sites on Cazenovia Lake, Eaton Brook and Lebanon reservoirs, Lake Moraine, Upper Leland Pond, Stoney Pond and Oneida Lake at Sullivan — the largest, with parking for 100 cars and trailers and accessible features. Three things to know before you drive out: the hard-surface Cazenovia Lake ramp needs a launch permit (315-655-3041), Stoney Pond is electric motors only, and access at Lake Moraine is disrupted through 2027 while the dam is rehabilitated.
Fishing Access
DEC publishes a county fishing access map covering Madison Reservoir, Cazenovia Lake, Chittenango Creek, Oriskany Creek, the Chenango River and Oneida Lake. Public fishing rights are permanent easements DEC bought from landowners — usually a 33-foot strip along one or both banks — so the right is to fish and walk the bank, not to cross the land to reach it.
