Adirondack day

Old Forge

Old Forge is where the Mohawk Valley goes when it wants the Adirondacks without committing to a long haul: about an hour and a quarter up NY-12 and NY-28. Water Safari gets the headlines, but the town also has a lake cruise, a scenic chairlift, a heritage railroad, a movie theater, an arts center, and a general store outfitting camps since about 1900.

Calypso's Cove (go-karts, ropes course), paddling rentals on the Moose River, and the Fulton Chain Trifecta hikes.
As a couple
Skip the water park: hike Bald Mountain, browse Old Forge Hardware, catch a View Arts concert or a movie at the Strand.

Old Forge family day (the Water Safari version)

Water Safari days are all-in days. Don't stack much around it — the park plus dinner is the day.

  1. 8:30 a.m.Leave the Valley: NY-12 north to NY-28 — about an hour and a quarter from Utica. Gates get busy after opening on hot days.
  2. 10 a.m.–4 p.m.Enchanted Forest Water Safari: Hours vary by date; check the park calendar. The circus shows run twice daily.
  3. 4:30 p.m.Main Street decompression: Ice cream and a lap through Old Forge Hardware.
  4. 5:30 p.m.Early dinner in the village, then home: You'll beat the leaving-the-park rush by a half hour.

Old Forge without Water Safari

The town works fine without the water park — this is the version for adults, off-season visits, or families who've already done the slides.

  1. 9:30 a.m.Bald Mountain: Two miles round trip to the fire tower. Go early — the Rondaxe Rd lot fills on summer weekends.
  2. NoonLunch in the village: Then browse Old Forge Hardware — budget more time than seems reasonable.
  3. 2 p.m.Lake cruise or Thendara train: The narrated cruise runs the first four lakes; the Otter Lake train run starts at $13. Pick one.
  4. 5 p.m.View Arts Center or an early movie at the Strand: Check View's calendar — summer concert nights are worth planning around.

Old Forge + Inlet in one day

The two hamlets sit 10 miles apart on NY-28, and locals treat them as one corridor. The trick is not overloading it — one anchor activity per town.

  1. 9:30 a.m.Bald Mountain fire tower: The trailhead is mid-corridor, 4.5 miles past Old Forge — hike it on the way in.
  2. 11:30 a.m.Continue to Inlet: Fifteen minutes up NY-28 through Eagle Bay.
  3. NoonScreamen Eagle pizza: Then Arrowhead Park: beach, docks, and Fourth Lake.
  4. 3 p.m.Northern Lights Creamery cone: Then drift back toward Old Forge.
  5. 4 p.m.Old Forge village hour: Hardware store, Goodsell Museum (free), or an early dinner before the drive home.
