Village Office & Clerk

Handles vital records (certified birth certificate copies are $10 each), permits, water/electric utility applications, FOIL requests, and tax/water/codes searches for village residents.

Village Justice Court

Presided over by Judge Audrey B. Dunning. Court sessions are held the second and fourth Tuesday and Friday of each month at 10 a.m.

Building Permits & Code Enforcement

A village permit is required for most construction; the village lists painting, siding, replacement windows, and driveways as exempt. The Fire Department stopped issuing building permits June 1, 2021, shifting the duty to the codes office.

Town & County Tax Collection (Town of German Flatts Receiver of Taxes)

Receiver of Taxes Cherri L. Hyer collects Town & County tax January–March and Central Valley school tax September–October for all German Flatts residents, including the Village of Ilion. Village property/water/electric bills are billed separately by the Village Treasurer.

Town Clerk (Town of German Flatts)

Separate from the Village of Ilion Clerk's office; issues marriage licenses (both parties must appear by 3 p.m. with a driver's license, sealed original birth certificate, and any divorce decrees) and handles town-wide vital records and genealogy requests.

Department of Public Works (DPW)

Maintains about 32 miles of village streets: storm and sanitary sewer repair, snow plowing/ice control, roadway patching and paving, and field/park maintenance, plus the marina and Central Mall area. Runs two 10-hour shifts daily (Mon–Thu and Tue–Fri) spring through fall, with added weather staffing mid-November through early spring.

Trash & Recycling

Wheelock Disposal Service ((315) 822-3427) collects village garbage and recycling on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday routes by address, coordinated through the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority. Village trash bags are $6 (large) and $5 (small), sold at Kinney Drugs, Cliff's, Fastrac, Mirabito, and Greenies Corner; quarterly cart fees run $103 (32-gal) to $139 (95-gal), billed through OHSWA.

Brush, Leaf & Yard Waste

Green waste (grass clippings, garden waste, shrub trimmings) is collected curbside Mondays from April 1 through the second week of November, set out Sunday night; up to 3 handled containers per property, 50 lb max each. Brush/shrubs are limited to 4 feet, bundled or in a reusable container. Fall loose-leaf pickup dates are announced separately by the DPW.

Police — Village of Ilion Police Department

The Village of Ilion Police Department covers the village. Dial 911 for emergencies.

Fire Department — Village of Ilion Fire Department

The village describes it as "a small, combination department," meaning a mix of career and volunteer staffing. Dial 911 for emergencies.

Parks & Recreation

Pavilions: Montgomery Street’s is first-come; Russell Park’s rents through a fee schedule — reserve via the Village office at (315) 895-7449. Courts and fields are listed under Parks & courts.

School District — Central Valley Central School District

Formed in 2013 by the merger of the former Ilion and Mohawk central school districts; the district office is co-located with Central Valley Academy.

Trash & Recycling Drop-off (OHSWA)

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority runs two drop-off sites serving both counties: EcoDrop Utica, 824 Sewage Plant Rd (weekdays 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Sat 7 a.m.–2 p.m.) and EcoDrop Rome, 575 Perimeter Rd (weekdays 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Sat 8 a.m.–noon); both closed Sunday. Recyclables, electronics, batteries, propane tanks and appliances without CFCs are free; household garbage is $2 per 35-gallon bag. Utica also takes household hazardous waste April through September.

DMV

County Clerk's DMV office at 109 Mary Street, Suite 1111, Herkimer, NY 13350 (Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–4:15 p.m. Labor Day–Memorial Day; 8 a.m.–3:45 p.m. Memorial Day–Labor Day). EDL and REAL IDs issued only 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.; CDLs only 8 a.m.–2 p.m.; no permit tests after 3 p.m. A seasonal satellite office in Old Forge, phone (315) 369-3301, is open Tue and Fri 10 a.m.–1:45 p.m. Dec 1–Mar 1 and Tue and Thu 10 a.m.–1:45 p.m. Mar 2–Nov 30, weather permitting, with limited staffing.

This office handles voter registration and absentee ballots; assigned poll sites are looked up by address at voterlookup.elections.ny.gov.

Senior Services

Herkimer County Office for the Aging, 109 Mary Street, Suite 1101, Herkimer (Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., closing 4 p.m. in summer). The office also runs door-to-door transportation for residents 60 and older: rides 8 a.m.–2 p.m., reservations required, suggested contribution $2–$8 round trip, with Little Falls and Dolgeville runs Thursdays and Fridays. NY Connects long-term-care help runs through the same office.

Electric & Gas (National Grid / NYSEG)

The county is split between two utilities — National Grid and NYSEG both hold electric and gas franchises here, and the villages of Frankfort, Ilion, and Mohawk each run their own municipal electric utility — so check your bill before calling. NYSEG: service (800) 572-1111 (Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–7 p.m.), electric emergencies and outages (800) 572-1131, gas emergencies (800) 572-1121.

Boat Launches (DEC)

State launch sites sit in two clusters. Along the Mohawk and Barge Canal: hard-surface ramps at Frankfort, Little Falls and Ilion, hand launches at Herkimer and Mohawk. North in the Town of Webb and Ohio: Fourth Lake, Stillwater Reservoir, Nicks Lake, North and South Lake and others. Stillwater Reservoir has accessible features; Nicks Lake charges a day-use fee in season and the rest do not.

Fishing Access — West Canada Creek

About 26 miles of accessible stream frontage and 11 parking lots, from the southeastern Adirondacks down to the Mohawk near Herkimer. Brook trout in the upper reaches, brown trout between Hinckley Dam and Herkimer, smallmouth and fallfish below. Trenton Falls is no-kill, artificial lures only, with an extended season. Below Trenton Falls and Hinckley Dam the creek surges without warning when the power dam releases — DEC advises watching for rising water, moving to shore, and wearing a flotation device.

Bike & Walking Trails — Empire State Trail

Little Falls to Canajoharie runs 19 miles east along an abandoned railroad bed, surfaced in paved asphalt and stonedust, through Little Falls, Fort Plain and Canajoharie. Public parking is at Herkimer Home State Historic Site and at a trailhead on the west side of Canajoharie. Services exist in those three villages and nowhere between them, and the stretches between access points are long — DEC allows 6 to 10 hours for the full distance. Dogs are permitted. Westward, the Utica–Frankfort section is 11 miles of which 7.5 follow the shoulder of Southside Road; off-road trail resumes a mile east of Frankfort.
